Here are the basic steps:

- Körkortstillstånd
220 kr
Here is the application to begin the process to your länsstyrelsen.
- Halkbana
1500 kr – 1800 kr
This is a safety course, not a test. Lots of hands-on driving. If you are in the Göteborg area, you will go here: http://www.storaholm.se/. Otherwise, just search for “halkbana” on Google and/or Enrio to find the nearest to you.
- Kunskapsprov (theory exam)
180 kr - 220 kr
Book a date/time via Vägverket's website or call 0771-17 18 19.
The test is taken on a computer.
- Körprov (practical driving exam)
645 kr – 845 kr (more if you need to use one of Vägverket’s cars for the test)
This is my last remaining step, so unfortunately I can’t offer much wisdom here. When this is done, I will update this post. I may pay for a couple of sessions with a driving instructor to prepare for this.
Info here: Boka-Prov.
Tips:
Buy the reading materials used or directly from Vägverket. It's cheaper. If you buy used, make sure that the materials are current. I just called Vägverket directly. Here is the Contacts Page.
You can take the kunskapsprov in English, if you are not confident enough in Swedish. Warning, it is written in British English, not American. Took me some time to get used the some of the terms. I also found out at the test that you can switch back and forth between English and Swedish. This can be helpful.
Start the processes now. Get your application ready for the körkortstillstånd, get your eye exam, buy the learning materials, start reading. Once everything is ready with the körkortstillstånd, book your halkbana course and your kunskapsprov. The registration process is very motivating and it feels good to have a date decided.
Study. The kunskapsprov is challenging, but if you do the work, you will pass. You need to know the material. If you read the book and take several practice exams before, you should be able to pass the test without having to pay for instruction from a school.
Take practice exams. Very helpful. You can take these online and some schools offer them in English and over the web. I was able to take the practice Exams in English. I used this school in Borås: http://johnnystrafikskola.com/. There are hundreds of others.
Attitude: It is easy to make the whole system “wrong”, especially if you have been driving for several years. Yes, the process is time consuming and expensive, but you will probably learn a lot and be a safer driver. Besides, thems the rules, get over it and do what you have to do to get your license. For me passing the theory exam was a bigger experience that getting my Swedish passport!
Don’t forget… When you go to take your kunskapsprov, you take the picture that will later be on your driver’s license.
Good luck!

Study Questions by Beka
In no particular order:
- What "defensive driving" means in terms of how you drive.
- Can you pass a stopped school bus?
- What is needed to park in disabled parking places?
- Know a lot about the right hand rule. They have lots of photos of junctions and one had to know if you had to apply it or not. And of course the options were A: Yes, apply it in photo a and b, B: apply it in photo c and d, C: apply it in photo d only...you get the idea...
- What one needs to be careful of when turning left at a green light.
- Uncontrolled pedestrian crossings...what should you do when a pedestrian is standing there looking at you? (not smile and wave!)
- You are at a traffic light in the right hand lane. There is 1 car in front of you and cars in the lane to your left. The car in front of you is going to be turning right. The light turns green and everyone starts to go...what do you need to be careful of now?
- Order of rank in terms of police signals, traffic lights, signs and road rules
- Best way to save gas when driving.
- Do you have to allow busses in the lane from a bus stop if they are indicating they want to pull onto the road?
- Datum zone parking
- Park only in the direction of travel.
- Do you always have to stop at a stop sign?
- They give you a series of photos and ask, "Are you allowed to overtake here?" so you need to look at all road markings, signs, if there are any intersecting roads, coming traffic etc.
- What should you do when being overtaken?
- Turning left on county roads, how SHOULD you do this?
- Most common accident when turning left on county roads?
- Parking near railway level crossings.
- What happens to the breaking distance when you change your speed from 100kph to 50kph?
- How do you break of your ABS does not work?
- What light combinations can you use for daytime driving?
- They give you a series of nighttime road photos and ask, "In which of these photos can you leave your mainbeams on the longest?"
- What should you do when you begin to aquaplane?
- What is the best way to avoid the risk of aquaplaning?
- How to "mature road users" react to situations?
- Different ways of seeing in terms of experienced and inexperienced drivers?
- Catalytic converters--how they work and engine preheaters.
- What happens if a vehicle has not been tested?
- What changes to a vehicle mean you have to take it in to be tested?
- How do you mark a load on your car in darkness?
- I had 2 questions with trailers and weight calculations.
- Do you have a duty to give your personal information to people at the scene of an accident? To anyone who asks? Even if the accident wasn't your fault?
- You come upon the scene of an accident. A person is injured and is not breathing. What EXACTLY should you do?
- What is the most important reason one should slow down when seeing a "road works ahead" sign?
There were some tricky parts I thought. Here are two:
- In terms of medication: How does one know if it is safe to drive after having taken a certain medication? The book states you can ask your doctor, ask your pharmacist, and look for the triangle warning sign on the box (although that is not always an indicator.) The 4 choices we were given had none of these, but 2 of the choices were (1) Look to see if there is a red mark on the box with a line through a car or (2) read the packet insert in your medication. Well, the choice is #2, but if one were reading the choices fast, one might read "read mark on the box" and select that as the answer, even though it would be wrong.
- Another tricky one: On entering the motorway---You are driving on the motorway and you are close to the accelleration lane/on ramp and you see a car coming that will be wanting on the motorway. What do you do? The book states that the car on the accelleration lane has the responsibility to ensure that no mishap occurs when going from the accelleration lane to the motorway. So it is HIS job and responsibility. The book also states that drivers on the motorway must facilitate by adjusting their speed and they can even move to the left lane. So I was confused as the whole idea of "it is HIS responsibility" and "driver's must facilitate their speed" seem like contradictory statements.
- Signs: 13, 17, 19, 24, 26, 29, 39, 41, 53, 55, 66, 71, 73, 74, 75, 79, 82, 83, 84, 87, 89, 108, 111, 135, 136, 139, 140, 141, 145, 148, 249, 219, 234, 236.
Very few questions said "What does this sign mean," but rather, they showed 4 signs and asked, "Which one, among other things, means that you cannot park here?" and they weren't "no parking signs" but "major road" sign and others....One also has to know which signs end at the next junction and which signs will have "cancelling signs" posted instead.
The test needs to be read very carefully. Read the questions and all the answers. Skip the question and go back to it later if you are uncertain.
And as someone once said, be aware that the English test has some Swedish in it. All of the interface is in Swedish of course, but I actually had a question about the exit rule when coming out of a "gåtgatan" or something--so there were words here and there not translated. None of the trailor registration certificates shown were translated, either. |
