Why does the front page of this site so rarely change? Where's the beef? Uh...
Also the status of the planned "sometime in 2004" removal of PHP-Nuke for this site, and such.
Where's The Beef?
There's been an almost complete lack of content submissions. This site has no paid workers to keep things fresh. It needs community involvement or nothing happens.
So take a look at past news and articles that have been submitted. (Click "By Topic" in the menu for a larger list than the front page.) Can you submit something like that? Please do! Help each other, help yourself.
PHP-Nuke Upgrade coming
Not sure when, since the guy who does the code doesn't really tell anyone anything, but a new upgrade to PHP-Nuke is coming soon. As soon as it's released, I'll give it a quick test on my home Apache/Linux setup, then move it to the site.
What it fixes? Your guess is as good as mine. What's different? Probably very little. Will it cause site downtime? Probably not, but if so an hour at the most. There will be advance notice as always if so.
Killing PHP-Nuke
I mentioned a (long) while back after PHP-Nuke was implemented to run the site that it turned out to be a serious mistake and it would be replaced. (For those who don't know, PHP-Nuke is a "website content management system", basically some core scripts that run the site, handling things like your login and news posts and forums and such.)
It is going to be replaced, sometime in 2004. Hopefully during the Spring, but no guarantees.
What it will be replaced with is FTB ConMan, a content management system which I am writing myself from scratch. A lot of work has already been done on it, but there's a lot to go as well. However, this is just letting you know that work is in progress, a lot is getting done, and once it is done all the little nasties that creep up on this site will be gone.
Functionality will have some similarities to PHP-Nuke, so you won't get lost on the site when the change is made. But everything will be a lot more integrated (the current forums are *hacked* into PHP-Nuke, not really working together, thus the avatar problems and such).
Functionality will also be improved. User profiles won't be the static dull forms they are now. I'll be able to add everything that was on the old site including easier ways to find people who live near you (for example). And other types of stuff which would be more specific to this site rather than the bland standard drivel of a profile you see now.
Forums will work about the same. Some features will change, some new added, etc.
More intuitive site navigation, administration, and other fun stuff. Interesting extra tools like marking people for a "friends" list, and... aw heck, no point giving it all away now. It'll be worth the change though!
And of course, I'll be trying to convert all the data for this site over to the new site when it happens. There's some obstacles, but I can get most of it. And if I can't, unlike last time the current site will be easy to leave accessible as long as needed.
But that's in 2004. Unfortunately until then no really new "features" will be added to the site, just content when people submit it or I get around to adding some.
Did I mention content?
Please submit some on-topic articles or Sweden news you've translated from Swedish!
Most every submission lately has been nothing but people submitting questions rather than useful information. Questions are rejected and the forums get pointed out to the submitter.
If you find the site useful, please take a moment to give something back! Make it even more useful for the next person coming here looking for answers!
